WORKSHOP: Intro to Metalsmithing: First Steps

WORSKHOP DESCRIPTION:
If you've wanted to try making your own jewelry but aren't sure where to start, this is the workshop for you! This particular workshop focuses on the wide range of things you can create using a few simple tools and supplies you may already own - or are fairly inexpensive to purchase. Here's what we'll cover in this two-hour workshop:

Supply and tool selection: We'll be focusing on creating with wire in this workshop. You'll learn how to select the right size and type of wire based on your needs as well as the right tools for what you plan to make.

Metal manipulation: Learn how different types of wire reacts to bending, coiling, hammering, and other types of basic metalworking. Create jewelry elements using these techniques.

Creating Findings: Each student will learn how to create a pair of hoop earrings, a selection of headpins, and other elements (commonly called "findings") that are the foundation of most jewelry designs. Learn how to arrange and assemble the elements you've created into balanced and functional piece of jewelry.

Finishing techniques: Learn how to put both practical and decorative finishing touches on your pieces using patinas and polishing techniques.

Q&A and demos: At the end of the workshop we'll have a short question and answer session so you're sure to get all the information you need to start creating on your own. This usually leads to some instructor demonstrations of techniques that you might consider trying as you progress in your jewelry making.

Each student can expect to leave this workshop with not only several finished jewelry pieces using brass and sterling silver wire, but the knowledge necessary to keep creating.
